Beer fish, street snacks, farm restaurants, and how to avoid the West Street price markup.
Bottom line: Yangshuo is the most tourist-friendly food town in the Guilin region. A reasonable daily food budget is ¥80–150 per person if you mix local shops with one nicer dinner. Avoid the English-only menus on West Street's main drag.
Yangshuo's food scene splits into three zones: the tourist restaurants along West Street, the cheaper local lanes behind it, and the farm restaurants scattered along the Yulong River and Ten Mile Gallery. Most visitors only see the first zone and leave thinking Yangshuo is expensive.
The town is also where many of Guilin's regional dishes are easiest to order in English. That convenience comes with a price premium, so it pays to know which dishes are worth the markup and which are better eaten in Guilin city or a village restaurant.
| Zone | Best for | Atmosphere | Price per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| West Street main strip | Beer fish, people-watching, English service | Loud, commercial | ¥80–200 |
| Side lanes off West Street | Local rice noodles, BBQ, cheap beer fish | Quieter, mixed local/tourist | ¥30–80 |
| Yulong River farm restaurants | Fresh fish, stuffed vegetables, rural calm | Relaxed, family-run | ¥40–100 |
| Jiuxian Village | Lunch stop while cycling or riding e-scooter | Village courtyard | ¥25–50 |
| Xingping old street | River fish, snacks, cheaper beer fish | Small-town, photogenic | ¥30–80 |

Yangshuo's signature dish is everywhere. The best versions use fresh Li River carp, tomatoes, and local peppers. Choose a restaurant with live fish tanks and Chinese customers.
Large river snails stuffed with minced pork, herbs, and garlic, then slow-braised. A sharing dish, best in farm restaurants.
Sticky rice, peanuts, and sometimes sausage cooked inside a bamboo tube. Filling and common in rural eateries.
The breakfast default. In Yangshuo, expect to pay slightly more than in Guilin city.
