Everything international travelers need to know before getting behind the wheel in China.
International Driving Permits (IDP) are not officially recognized for driving in mainland China. You need a valid Chinese driver's license to rent and drive a car legally.
Foreign nationals can legally drive in China, but only with a Chinese driver's license. There are two common ways to obtain one:
If you do not have a Chinese license, your legal options are a private driver, taxi/DiDi, or joining organized tours.
Yes — if you have a Chinese driver's license and a valid passport. Most major rental companies in China accept foreign licenses only after they have been converted to a Chinese license. You will also need:
Traffic drives on the right. Speed limits are clearly posted and enforced by cameras. Key rules to remember:
| Category | Typical daily rate | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Economy sedan | ¥200–350 | Couples, city + Yangshuo |
| Compact SUV | ¥350–550 | Small families, light luggage |
| Mid-size SUV | ¥550–900 | Longji mountain roads, groups |
Most rentals are picked up at Guilin Liangjiang Airport or downtown rail station branches. Book at least a few days ahead during peak seasons. For more detail, see our dedicated car rental guide.
Hotel parking is the easiest option. When visiting attractions, look for designated lots. In Yangshuo, street parking can be tight — arrive early. Longji has paid parking near the main entrances; some hotels in the terraces offer their own small lots.
Rural Guilin roads are generally in good condition, but mountain roads to Longji are narrow and winding. Local drivers may pass unexpectedly. Drive defensively, especially around scooters and farm vehicles. Avoid night driving in mountain areas if possible.
Baidu Maps and Amap (Gaode) are the most reliable navigation apps in China. Google Maps does not work well without a VPN. Download offline maps before heading into areas with weak signal, especially in Longji.
